Netflix Removes Chinese Drama From Vietnam After Map Dispute

Netflix: Shine on me

Netflix has removed a Chinese drama series from its Vietnam platform after authorities objected to an episode featuring a map showing disputed territorial claims in the South China Sea.

The 27-episode romance drama Shine On Me includes a scene in which a map containing the so-called “nine-dash line” is displayed during a lecture. Vietnam has long objected to the depiction, saying it does not reflect its official position on maritime boundaries.

The Ministry of Culture requested the removal of the series on January 3 and asked Netflix to take it down within 24 hours. A review on Tuesday showed that the show was no longer available on Netflix in Vietnam.

The disputed map appears in episode 25 of the series during a presentation about China’s solar energy development. The show had previously ranked among Netflix’s most-watched titles in several markets, including Vietnam, Singapore, and Taiwan.

China has not officially commented on the removal. However, China’s state-run newspaper Global Times published a commentary calling for cultural exchanges to be kept separate from territorial issues.

The case highlights how streaming platforms operating across multiple jurisdictions must adapt content to local regulations and sensitivities.
