Tech giant’s strategic move diversifies supply chains and elevates Vietnam’s role in premium smartphone production.
Google is planning a major shift in its smartphone manufacturing strategy by developing and manufacturing its high-end Pixel phones in Vietnam in 2026, according to reports from Nikkei Asia and other international outlets.
Under the plan, Google will start handling critical stages of the New Product Introduction (NPI) process — which includes design verification, process development and production refinement — for its flagship devices such as Pixel, Pixel Pro and Pixel Fold in Vietnam rather than in China. The lower-end Pixel A series is expected to continue development in China for the time being.
This marks a significant evolution beyond Vietnam’s existing role as an assembly hub into a deeper manufacturing and development center. Google already assembles many of its Pixel smartphones in the country, but moving NPI — the most complex and technically demanding phase of bringing a new model to market — signals growing confidence in Vietnam’s manufacturing ecosystem and technical capabilities.
The move reflects a broader industry trend as global technology companies diversify supply chains away from China amid geopolitical and tariff pressures. Similar strategic shifts have been seen with other major players, such as Apple expanding iPhone production in India, underscoring Southeast Asia’s rising importance in electronics manufacturing.
For Vietnam, hosting high-end smartphone development and production could bring significant investment, technology transfer and skilled jobs, strengthening its position as a key node in global tech supply chains.
Google has not officially commented on the reports, and details on timelines and specific facilities are still emerging.
