Three Days in the Same Socks: My Life as an HVAC Tech in Phoenix

I’m Daniel. I’m 38 years old, and I work as an HVAC technician here in Phoenix. I wear size 14 boots, and when summer hits, those boots turn into sweat traps.

A typical workday for me is at least 10 hours—sometimes longer—climbing into attics, squeezing under houses, and hauling equipment through the blistering heat. The air inside those attics can easily hit 140 degrees, and my feet are inside steel-toe boots that trap all that heat and sweat.

By mid-morning, my socks are drenched. By the end of the day, they feel heavy and soaked through. I used to change my socks every day—or even twice a day—when I first started, but now I wear the same pair for three days straight.

It’s not because I want to; it’s because I don’t have a washer or dryer at home, and laundry days are few and far between. Changing socks every day would mean spending half my day washing, drying, and folding clothes. I just can’t afford the time or the money to do laundry that often.

By the third day, my socks get stiff and crunchy after drying overnight. The sweat soaks deep into the fabric, and when it dries, it hardens in places, making the socks feel like cardboard. The smell is sharp and sour—like a mix of old sweat, dust from insulation, and the metallic scent of the equipment I work on.

When I open my truck door after a shift, the smell hits me right away. It’s something you get used to, but it never really goes away.

Sometimes when I’m working inside someone’s home, I take off my boots at the door to avoid tracking dirt around. But even then, the sweat from my socks sometimes leaves faint marks on the floors before it evaporates. I hate that it happens, but there’s not much I can do.

Working in Phoenix in the summer is tough. You sweat through everything—your shirt, your pants, your socks. There’s no way around it. I’ve accepted that this is part of the job.
