Across Europe, sock habits vary wildly. Some men treat fresh socks as a daily ritual, while others wear the same pair for multiple days—sometimes even longer. Footwires surveyed 500 men from eight European countries to see where men wear their socks the longest… and how strong things get after prolonged wear.
Participants were aged 24–60, shoe sizes 46–52 (US 12–17), and came from diverse professions. The results paint a vivid—and pungent—picture of European sock culture.
8. United Kingdom 🇬🇧 – A Mixed Bag
Average wear: 2.1 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥 (Varies by shoe and weather)
British men fall into two camps: daily sock changers or repeat wearers.
Harry, 42, Lawyer, Size 48 (US 14):
“I wear them twice if they’re not too bad. Dress socks are thin, so they get smelly.”
7. Sweden 🇸🇪 – Fresh but Functional
Average wear: 2.2 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥 (Mild to moderate)
Swedish men are a bit more aware , but winter encourages rewearing.
Erik, 37, Construction Worker, Size 50 (US 15.5):
“If they don’t smell too bad, I’ll wear them again. But after two days, it’s time to change.”
6. Netherlands 🇳🇱 – Practical but Not Always Fresh
Average wear: 2.3 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥 (Moderate, though some cases worse)
Dutch men are split—some change daily, others stretch socks longer.
Daan, 31, Software Engineer, Size 47 (US 13):
“Honestly, I forget. Sometimes I realize I’ve been wearing the same pair for three days. It’s not a big deal.”
5. Italy 🇮🇹 – Fashion Meets Footwear
Average wear: 2.4 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥🔥 (Strong, but often masked by cologne)
Luxury socks don’t always go straight to the wash. Italians care about footwear but can be practical.
Marco, 40, Sales Director, Size 46 (US 12):
“I spend a lot on socks. I don’t just throw them in the wash after one wear. That would be wasteful.”
4. Spain 🇪🇸 – Hot Climate, Long Sock Use
Average wear: 2.5 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (Strong, especially in summer)
Even with sweaty feet, Spanish men often rewear socks out of habit.
Javier, 29, IT Specialist, Size 48 (US 14):
“Yeah, they get sweaty, but I just let them dry overnight. My feet smell, sure, but whose don’t?”
3. France 🇫🇷 – Stylish but Stubborn
Average wear: 2.7 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥🔥 (Moderate to strong, depending on material)
Fashionable French men sometimes stretch high-quality socks beyond a single wear.
Louis, 35, Financial Advisor, Size 46 (US 12):
“Expensive socks don’t need washing after one wear. I air them out at night and wear them again.”
2. Poland 🇵🇱 – The Surprising Contender
Average wear: 2.9 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (Very strong, noticeable in a room)
Long working hours and harsh winters make frequent sock changes less of a priority.
Tomasz, 32, Truck Driver, Size 47 (US 13.5):
“I’m on the road a lot and don’t always have time to change socks daily. They get bad after a few days, but nothing a bit of air-drying can’t fix.”
1. Germany 🇩🇪 – Champions of Rewearing
Average wear: 3.1 days per pair
How stinky: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 (Overwhelmingly strong)
Germany tops the list. Practicality reigns: why wash socks if they “still feel fine”?
Felix, 38, Mechanical Engineer, Size 48 (US 14):
“I’ll wear my socks for three or four days, easy. If they’re still dry, why change them? My girlfriend disagrees, but I think she’s just overly sensitive.”
Johann, 44, Factory Supervisor, Size 50 (US 15.5):
“Work boots all day, then trainers in the evening. By the time I finally take them off, they stink a bit. My wife makes me leave them on the balcony at night.”
